The poet, novelist, conductor and composer Boito was born in 1842.
He was one of the most exciting and versatile personality of the Italian culture in the 19th century.
He wrote Mefistofele in 1867.
The premier was held in Milan 1868 but because of the composer’s lack of experience as a conductor the performance was a failure.
However after the revision in 1875 the composition received loud celebration.
Boito’s opera was different from the works of Berlioz of Gounod.
He had drawn from Goethe’s Faust as well but he focused on the wager of God and Satan.
Boito made small changes on the opera between 1876 and 1881.
Mefistofele because of it’s fragmented, episodic structure and not formulaic dramaturgy has become a modern opera which is an exciting theatrical adventure at all times.
