Pál Steiner, one of the leader of Budapest City said it’s true it would be cheaper to build a new bridge! The cost of the reconstruction is Guinness record: HUF 26 billion! (In Germany a 7 times longer bridge was built above the sea from this cost.) But the bridge will get a bycicle way and the tram way and the sculptures will be fully reconstructed on the bridge.
After 21 August only pedestrians, buses and trams can go to the other side of the bridge for one year, cars, vans not.
Strabag company won the right to make the reconstruction.
Mayor of Budapest, Gábor Demszky agreed that the renovation of the Margit bridge cannot be postponed any longer.
